STUDY ON PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN THE CANARY ISLANDS

This study, commissioned by the Fundación Canarina and carried out by Estudios Sociales Geas 7, provides a rigorous analysis of the values, opinions and attitudes of the Canarian population regarding the environment, the socio-economic model and the sustainability challenges facing the archipelago. Its findings are intended to serve as a basis for guiding public policy and social action in the environmental and territorial spheres.

The study reflects a broad social consensus on the need to limit the growth of tourism, to tackle structural problems such as housing, and to address the lack of representation of public opinion in institutional decision-making.

Based on 409 interviews representative of the population of the Canary Islands, with a confidence level of 95.45%, the study portrays a society with a high level of environmental awareness and a deep unease with the current development model: 90% consider it necessary to transform the economic model, housing is identified as the main structural problem linked to mass tourism, and over 60% feel that institutions are not responding to the real needs of the population.
